The Viking Suicides Written by George Sapio Presented by WSRep Reading Series JULY 8 @ 7p FREE ADMISSION After a Viking-themed suicide attempt (later emulated by desperate women across the United States), 15-year old Chelsea Spademan becomes the leader of a women’s refuge. Her dysfunctional parents, Walter and Mallory, are barred from seeing her by rich grandmother Millie’s lawyers. Chelsea (known as “Peaches”) begins to teach women how to not just survive but to fight back, starting a series of retaliatory assaults and murders against suspected males. After a year of trying to see both Mallory and Chelsea with no success, Walter gets to contact Mallory by joining her on a reality game show. They try to gain access to Chelsea through a rapidly declining Millie, but Millie’s condition only leads Walter to commit an act he sees as ethical justice. George Sapio’s play “Oatmeal and a Cigarette” was awarded Critics’ Pick at the 2008 Cincinnati Fringe Festival and was published by Broadway Play Publishing. An earlier work, “Ghosts,” won the 2001 Mildred and Albert Panowski Award. He is the founder and artistic director of the annual Ithaca Fringe Festival. He also produces and hosts “Onstage/Offstage,” a podcast now in its sixth year of production featuring interviews with theatre professionals of all walks and live readings of hot-off-the-printer plays. His book, “Workshopping the New Play, a Guide for Playwrights, Directors, and Dramaturgs,” a how-to book for playwrights and directors, is published by Applause Books. He received his M.F.A. in creative writing/playwriting from Goddard College. He is also a photojournalist who has published a book, “Collateral Damage,” which features his pictures from two trips to Iraq in 2003.
