Maintenance and Utility Worker – Full-Time
The Village of Cary, IL (18,271), a northwest suburb of Chicago, is seeking to fill a full-time Maintenance and
Utility Worker position within the Public Works Department at our award-winning wastewater treatment plant.
The position performs technical and physical work in the operation, maintenance, and improvement of the
Village’s utility operations, with a particular focus on a variety of systems associated with the Village’s
wastewater treatment plant. Cross-training opportunities are also available maintaining the drinking water
production/treatment/storage/distribution infrastructure, sewage lift stations, and sewer collection system.
Both experienced Utility Operators with current IEPA certifications and entry-level candidates without
experience in wastewater treatment will be considered.
The base salary range for this position is $42,650.38 - $78,185.05, depending upon the candidate’s experience
and certifications. This is a full-time, non-exempt (overtime eligible) position. The Village of Cary offers

Assists in the maintenance, installation, service, routine operation and repair of the mechanical,
electrical, chemical, and biological wastewater treatment equipment and systems associated with the
Village’s wastewater treatment plant, sewer lift stations, sludge drying beds, and the sanitary sewer
Assists in routine laboratory testing as part of the village’s regulatory programs.
Assists in the response to emergency situations such as the repair of treatment plant equipment, pumps,
motors, and sewer mains.
Performs snow plowing and ice control functions.
Implementation of various public works programs.
Assists with water main break repairs, hydrant flushing, and water meter reading.
Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or
needed repairs to supervisor.
Performs related work and other duties as assigned or required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The ideal candidate must have excellent customer service skills, the ability to operate heavy equipment and
tools, assess problems and perform basic calculations. This is a non-supervisory position with opportunities for
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A Water Quality Control Operations Program Certificate
(SIUE short program or equivalent) is a plus. Certification as an IEPA Drinking Water Treatment Plant
Operator (Class D or higher) or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (Class 4 or higher) is highly desirable,
but not required.
Candidates must obtain their Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 60 days of
employment. Candidates should possess the ability to solve problems comprehensively and perform in a fast-
paced environment working both independently and as part of a team.
