Small Joys, Big Blessings-Article by Kay Reissig

Small Joys, Big Blessings
As we step into a brand-new year, I find myself thinking less about resolutions and more about appreciation — the kind that lingers in quiet moments. Winter has a way of slowing us down, giving us time to notice things we might rush past in other seasons.

Maybe that’s one of its gifts — the gentle nudge to pause, breathe, and be grateful for the small joys that make up our days. For me, gratitude often shows up in simple ways: the sound of the coffee maker on a cold morning, the soft glow of a candle on the kitchen table, or a good conversation that
warms the heart more than any blanket could. These are the blessings that remind me that even when the world feels gray and still, life continues to offer light — if we take the time to look for it.

I’ve come to realize that gratitude isn’t just a feeling — it’s a practice. Some days, it comes easy; other days, I have to look a little harder. But even on those harder days, I try to find at least one thing to give thanks for. Maybe it’s the neighbor who clears my sidewalk after a snowfall, or a phone call from an old friend. Each small act reminds me that kindness is alive and well, even in the chill of winter. This time of year also makes me think about the people who’ve touched my life — family, friends, neighbors, and the wonderful community that continues to grow around us. We’ve shared laughter, challenges, and milestones together. And in all of it, I see the thread of gratitude weaving its way through our stories, connecting us in ways words can’t fully capture.

As February approaches and hearts begin to appear in every window and shop, I’m reminded that love and gratitude are close companions. Love makes us grateful; gratitude deepens our love. Whether we’re surrounded by family or spending a quiet evening alone, both are there — steady and sustaining, like the warmth of a fire that never quite burns out.

So as winter continues, may we each find joy in the small things — a good meal, a warm blanket, a friendly smile. Because when we count our blessings, even the tiniest ones, the days somehow feel a little brighter. “Give thanks for a little, and you will find a lot.” – Hausa Proverb
