“This year has definitely been unsettling as many have faced job loss or a reduction in work hours,” said Catherine Jones, associate vice president of workforce development at MCC. “But we knew that meant it was more important than ever for us to hold this job fair—even if we had to reimagine it as a virtual event. We wanted to spread the word that companies are hiring.”
Participants will need to register beforehand to receive the link to the event. In the virtual format, attendees can schedule a 10-minute one-on-one meeting with the employer(s) of their choice, and can see as many employers as time allows.
“We encourage people to dress professionally and have a PDF copy of their resume ready to send to employers,” said Demetrius Robinson, coordinator of career services at MCC. “Those who would like individual assistance developing or updating their resume prior to the fair can contact careers@mchenry.edu or (815) 455-8566.”
The MCC Business Club is also sponsoring three free workshops in the weeks leading up to the event. “Elevator Speech/Resume and Cover Letter Writing” will be held Tuesday, October 6 from 1–3 p.m.; “Job Searching Through a Pandemic” will be held Thursday, October 14 from 6–7 p.m.; and “Sell Your Value in an Interview” will be held Tuesday, October 19 from 3–4 p.m. No registration for these workshops is required. All three meetings can be accessed via the following Zoom link: https://mchenrycc.zoom.us/j/97526919013.
Employer registration has already reached capacity for this year’s fair, but those looking for local talent can visit www.mchenry.edu/hireascot any time to post a job for free.
Students, alumni, and community members can all search MCC’s Hire a Scot job board throughout the year or take advantage of career coaching, practice interviews, or individual appointments to discuss goals and job search strategies through the College’s Office of Career Services.
